This September on Made For Us, we're bringing you a series of conversations that just might change the way you think about classical music. You'll hear from performers and composers who are shaping the future of the genre and exploring who it really belongs to, and who belongs.
Speaker One:Reading music has been a constant struggle for me. So I don't know whether there is a form of musical dyslexia or whether I was just so stubborn because I was playing by ear from a very early age that I couldn't be bothered to learn any other way.
Speaker Two:So I feel like music gave me colors. I could once see things when I was little 'cause I was partially sighted, and then lost my sight when I was seven. And I think what I found with music was the colors that I saw when I heard music.
Narrator:We've teamed up with Classically Black, a festival celebrating inclusion and innovation in classical music. Presented by Black Lives in Music, it's an event in the UK that brings together artists expanding the boundaries of the art form and asking how it can speak to 21st-century audiences.
Speaker Three:It took a long time to bring this repertoire to the UK, to the London concert stage, because until then, this music wasn't acknowledged as classical. I was told by the concert organizers that, "Well, this is world music, it's not classical music."
Speaker Four:It's basically my celebration of Black boy joy, which I think is very revolutionary because we don't often get to see Black men in the media portrayed as, as creative and soft and gentle and feeling.
