Our names are a huge part of our identity, but they're not all equally recognized by our tech.
AP:The red squiggly line when you're trying to write your name is a little bit of a gut punch.
DS:Why are certain names considered the wrong name?
TS:Coming up on Made For Us, we're exploring what happens when the computer says no to a name. When your device treats your identity is just another misspelled word. We'll hear from people whose names are constantly marked as mistakes.
XA:You're never going to meet someone else with this name. So to me, it's like a superpower. But yeah, it's something that I've always had to like see that red line underneath or just like continue changing it when it autocorrects.
TS:We'll meet the researchers uncovering how bias gets built into our apps and devices.
RD:Here's another one. Aarav, A-A-R-A-V, just hitting the space bar changed it to either Aardvark or Arachnophobia.
TS:And the campaign is demanding that tech companies do better.
CW:Our objective should just be how could we get one or two or three of the big tech companies to actually engage with us and say, wow, thanks for raising this. We can actually do something about this. And thankfully we're making some progress.
TS:It's a story about tech, language, culture and identity. And who's missing when technology gets built?
AP:Nobody gets anything perfect when they first roll it out, but there's sometimes fundamental basics where you're like, you've completely missed a huge market here.
