Hey, quick question for you. Do you think of yourself as average? Standard? Typical? If you're shaking your head, then here's another question. Why do so many products target the average consumer and ignore large chunks of the population? And is it really possible to design for everyone? Welcome to Made For Us, a new podcast that explores the intersection of innovation and inclusion. On the show, my guests and I will attempt to answer some of these questions. I'm Tosin Sulaiman, a former business journalist turned podcaster. I'll be speaking to founders, designers, and experts in inclusive design who've made it their mission to create products that work better for everyone.
:I think this generation especially has been the most vocal about ‘just because it's always been done this way doesn't mean that's the right way.’
:About 95 percent of the world's websites are not accessible to people with disabilities at the front page because people have not deliberately made them accessible for people with disabilities. The AI challenge is exactly the same.
:I think the oldest customer on record was 103. And as he would say, “I don't have anything wrong with me. My fingers just don't work.”
Narrator:On the show, my guests share how they found opportunities that others had missed.
:I think very few people saw an opportunity there because they assumed the default status quo of reading was good enough and my like very clear personal experience reading sucks. And if you could make something that's better people will use it.
Narrator:And when they realised they had something game changing.
:I remember once we got this insane order from Disney, like Disneyland. It was like ridiculous numbers.
:The truth is we can hardly keep inventory in stock. So our growth has been incredible.
Narrator:This show is for anyone who's curious about how to design for inclusivity, and for those of you who, like many of my guests, have felt ignored by a product or industry.
:You use foundation to colour your pink shoes to match your skin tone. You do it no matter what, because there wasn't a shoe that was made for us.
:I always thought there's something wrong with my face and not the product.
:I was just tired of pancaking. It's messy. It breaks down the life of the shoe because ultimately you're putting liquid on a satin shoe. It's a matter of time before it just becomes mush.
Narrator:Subscribe now to Made For Us. Coming soon wherever you listen to podcasts.
